While researching Developmental Milestones ages 5-8 for my Growth and Learning course at Rowan University I learned a lot about characteristics of a developing 5 year old. By the end of 5 years old a child should show movement skills such as being able to hop, climb and stand on one foot for 10 seconds or longer. They should be able to use some hand-eye coordination skills such as printing some letters, use a fork and spoon and performing basic toilet needs. Language is also part of a 5 year olds routine. By the age of 5 a child should be able to recall a story, speak sentences of more then 5 words, say name and address and use future tenses. Also at the age of 5 child can count 10 or more objects, name at least 4 colors and understand things used in their every day life such as money and food. Their social and emotional level also is relevant by this age. At the age of 5 they want to be like their friends, like to sing and dance and are aware of their sexuality.  This information is very useful as a teacher of early childhood education.  For more information on the Developmental Milestones of a 5 year old visit:The American Academy of Pediatrics Book:
